MY FAVOURITE POEM IS “ POVERTY “ BY D H LAWRENCE
“ The only people , I ever heard talk about my lady
poverty were rich people, or people who imagined themselves rich . saint francis
himself was a rich and spoiled young man.
Being born among the working people I know that poverty
is a hard old hag , and a monster , when you’ve pinched for actual necessities . and whoever says she isn’t ,
is a liar .
I don’t wan’t
to be poor , it means I am pinched . but neither do I want to be rich . when I look at this pine tree near the sea , that
grows out of rock , and plumes forth , plumes forth , I see it has a natural abundance .
With it’s roots it has a grand grip on it’s
daily bread , and it’s plumes look like green cups held up to the sun and air and full of wine .
I want to be like that , to have a natural abundance and
plume forth and be splendid .”

in modern warfare , that pushed back the german war machine from france , the outcome of the battle for Europe and indeed
the complete outcome of world war 2 , may have had a different outcome with germany
taking complete control of the world . that is how I perceive and see this major
turning point of the war in Europe with the d-day
landing at Normandy and the push towards berlin .
7 . THE LANDING AND BATTLE FOR
GALLIPOLI - WHICH SAW
THE BIRTH OF THE LEGEND OF THE ANZACS IN
WORLD
WAR ONE - this
ill conceived plan and order by the british high command for the landing , battle and taking of a bluff of land at Gallipoli
in turkey, on a small beach and with no where to go but up the cliffs to certain
death , was a disarsterous , sad and senseless taking of many hundreds and hundreds
of australian and new zealand lives . like the
d-day landing in world war two , both forces landed on the
beach to face a constant barrage of fire which saw many soldiers killed before they got to any safety in the mounds of beach sand . but the australian and
new zealand
armies showing immense pride in the uniforms they wore of the countries they
came from and under the australian and new zealand flags which they took into battle for the very first time and not under
the british flag , initially had no intention of withdrawing from the bloody
assault , but after 2 days and three nights of constant slaughter they had no
other choice but to draw back to the beach and safety of the navy waiting just off shore for their safe pickup . this courage
under fire that was witnessed by many other countries earned praise from many nations around the globe and on both sides of
the conflict of world war one and still today the australian soldier is recognized as one of courage and honour and fight
with pride in any conflict that they may have to under that anzac legend that was born on the beach of Gallipoli in world
war one as a matter of fact all aussies are known as bronzed Anzacs where ever they may go around the world , even civilians so much so was that spirit shown
by those that fought for their countries freedom from the face of oppression - that is how I see the birth of the
- ANZAC LEGEND

18 . THE SINKING OF THE TITANIC
19 . THE LEAD UP TO AND SINKING OF THE GERMAN BATTLE
SHIP
BISMARK IN WORLD WAR TWO -
the bismark was launched early in world war 2 and was the biggest battleship and pride of the german navy . its activities in the north atlantic were a menace to the many merchant ships ferrying much needed
supply’s to England from America .
when it came out into the atlantic from a Norwegian fiord under cover of bad weather it was tracked by british warships from
scarpa flow headed by the british navy’s flagship and also there largest
battleship , hms hood , in an unfortunate encounter the hood was hit by one shell fired by the bismark over 12 miles away and sunk with 1500 lives lost with just only 3 survivors after hitting it’s
powder magazine . this was a tremendous blow to English naval hopes in the north atlantic but they did not ease up on the
chase for the bismark . she was hit by a torpedo fired by one of many planes who took off from the aircraft carrier hms ark
royal bought up into the north atlantic from it’s duties in the middle east to bolster the other british ships this hit damaged the bismarks rudder which made it almost impossible to manouver and
gave the chasing british naval fleet time to catch up and in what was a classic battle the bismark outnumbered ans surrounded
was sunk under tremendous fire power , this ended the german navies chance to make the north atlantic theirs and the war in
that area of conflict changed in englands favour .
20 . THE BRITISH AND ZULU WARS IN SOUTH AFRICA - in south Africa in 1879 natives of the zulu nation led by their king KZUWAIR made war on the british occupational forces . on the
22nd and 23rd of January in that year over 4000 warriors
led an attack on the tiny mission station called rourke’s drift in the natal colony , south Africa manned by only 144
officers , soldiers and other ranks of the 24th of foot regiment . after only
one day earlier , wiping out over 1500 soldiers of the same unit of the 24th of foot on the slopes of the mountain isandhlwana leaving no one alive . at that
time in 1879 in the 100 years since the Victoria cross
{ the American medal of honour equivilant } was created for valour and extreme courage beyond that normally expected of a british soldier in the face
of the enemy , only 1344 had been awarded , 11 of them were won by those defenders of the mission station at rourkes drift
led by leuitenant john elliot chard the officer in command of those courageous
men left after the zulu warriors called a holt to the battle and left honouring as they went , the brave soldiers and for
no other reason , as they completely outmatched them in strength and numbers and it would have been only a matter of hours
before they wiped them out as well . this I know from my knowledge of history
.
